Meaning & Translation

Verse 1:

With His neck sanctified by the sacred water of the celestial Ganga flowing through His dense forest-like matted hair, wearing a lofty serpent as a necklace around His neck, and performing the fierce Tandava dance to the rhythmic beats of 'Damad-Damad' echoing from His Damaru—may that Lord Shiva bestow auspiciousness and prosperity upon us all.

Verse 2:

May my mind find eternal devotion in Lord Shiva, whose head is adorned by the swift, swirling waves of the celestial river Ganga trapped within the deep cauldron of His matted locks, upon the flat surface of whose forehead a brilliant fire blazes with the sound 'Dhagad-Dhagad', and who wears the infant crescent moon upon His crown.

Verse 3:

May my mind find continuous delight in the Supreme Being (Shiva), the beloved companion of the daughter of the mountain king (Parvati), in whose mind all beings of the universe find joy, whose boundless gaze of compassion dispels the most formidable calamities, and who wears the endless directions as His garment (Digambara).

Verse 4:

May my mind hold immense joy in the protector of all living beings (Lord Shiva), the luster of the gems upon the hoods of the tawny serpents in His locks illuminating the faces of the maidens of the directions like saffron paste, and who is resplendent wrapped in an upper garment fashioned from the thick hide of an intoxicated elephant.

Verse 5:

May Lord Shiva—whose footstool is greyed by the pollen dust falling from the crowns of Indra and all the bowing deities, whose matted hair is bound with the garland of the king of serpents, and whose head is crowned with the crescent moon (the friend of the Chakora bird)—grant us enduring wealth and auspiciousness.

Verse 6:

May the matted hair of Lord Shiva, the Great Kapali, bestow spiritual and material prosperity upon us—He whose forehead's blazing sparks of fire consumed Kamadeva (the god of desire), who is reverently saluted by the lord of celestials, and whose head is crowned with the nectar-beaming crescent moon.

Verse 7:

May my deep devotion abide in the Three-Eyed Lord, who offered the formidable Kamadeva as an oblation into the terrible fire blazing with 'Dhagad-Dhagad' upon His broad forehead, and who is the sole supreme artist skilled in drawing ornamental designs upon the bosom of Parvati, the daughter of the mountain king.

Verse 8:

May Lord Shiva, who bears the weight of the entire cosmos, bestow supreme prosperity upon us—He whose throat is dark like the midnight of a new moon shrouded in dense rain-clouds, who holds the celestial Ganga, wears the elephant hide, and is adorned with the moon of all divine arts.

Verse 9:

I worship Lord Shiva, whose neck radiates a luster like a cluster of fully bloomed blue lotuses, who destroyed Kamadeva, conquered the demon Tripurasura, severed the bonds of worldly existence, demolished Daksha's sacrifice, slew the demons Gajasura and Andhakasura, and subdued even Yama, the lord of death.

Verse 10:

I worship Lord Shiva, free from all pride, who is like a bee savoring the sweet, flowing nectar from the floral cluster of all auspicious arts of Goddess Parvati, and who is the slayer of Kamadeva, Tripura, earthly bondage, Daksha's sacrifice, Gajasura, Andhakasura, and death itself.

Verse 11:

Victorious is Lord Shiva, whose fierce Tandava dance is set to the auspicious and deep rhythm of 'Dhimid-Dhimid' from the Mridanga, while the terrible fire on His forehead blazes forth, stoked by the hissing breath of the great serpents whirling rapidly across the vast sky.

Verse 12:

When will I achieve that equanimity of mind to worship Lord Sadashiva impartially—viewing alike a hard stone and a soft bed, a serpent and a pearl necklace, a priceless gem and a lump of dirt, a friend and an enemy, a blade of grass and a lotus-eyed maiden, and a common citizen and an emperor?

Verse 13:

When will I attain supreme bliss, dwelling in a secluded cave along the banks of the celestial Ganga, freed from impure thoughts, holding my hands folded reverently upon my head, calming my restless eyes, bearing the sacred mark on my forehead, and continually chanting the holy name 'Shiva'?

Verse 14:

May the radiant, divine aura of Lord Shiva's limbs—sweetened by the fragrant nectar dripping from the jasmine flowers woven in the hair of celestial maidens—delight our minds day and night, and grant us the supreme spiritual state (Moksha).

Verse 15:

May this supreme mantra of 'Shiva'—which consumes demonic forces like the fierce submarine fire (Vadavanala), bestows the eight great occult powers (Ashta Siddhis), echoes like the auspicious songs of marriage, and is adorned by the beautiful-eyed Parvati—grant victory over the entire universe.

Verse 16:

Whoever regularly recites, remembers, or listens to this supreme hymn attains perpetual purity and swiftly achieves steadfast devotion to Lord Shiva, the supreme Guru. There is no other refuge, for contemplation of Lord Shankara completely dispels all illusion and delusion from the soul.

Verse 17:

Whoever recites this hymn composed by the ten-headed Ravana during the evening twilight (Pradosha) or at the end of Shiva's worship is blessed by Lord Shambhu with permanent, unwavering prosperity, accompanied by chariots, elephants, and horses forever.
